KING TATTOOS ON PROSTITUTES - LETTER TO EDITOR OF INDEPENDENT JOURNAL

Dear Editor:

I'm writing in response to the article Conor Swanberg did for your publication on pimps and their tattooing of their victims.  http://www.ijreview.com/2015/09/413813-sex-trafficking-survivors-show-brands-pimps-forced-wear/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Social&utm_content=video-social-mobile-bar&utm_campaign=Sharing Things are not always what they appear to be to an untrained eye. For example, many detectives used to think a crime scene with candles, pentagrams, and even sacrificed animals were signs of satanic rituals. However, a trained detective knows this is usually instead signs of a drug party by youngster imitating what they "think" is satanic.

When it comes to sex trafficking - I should know. I'm the founder of the modern day sex trafficking movement itself. I'm the one who stood up in 1987 on national TV shows, news stations, with reporters, etc., stating that sex trafficking was not an urban myth, that it was real, that it was happening in the USA to both men and women and that our country needed to start changing the way it responded to this issue in order to get the victims the help they needed on many levels - along with setting up the first hotline, the first programs, the first outreach, etc. directly to those in the sex industry.

After fighting, and talking, for 13 years - sex trafficking finally got federal recognition with the Trafficking Act of 2000. Which promptly got this movement hijacked by people who wanted to exploit us in ways pimps haven't even dreamed about. Currently, I'm seeing federal grant money being used to beef up local police budgets, with a few bucks thrown to a couple of homeless shelters to get them to play along with the farce of appearing to create a "task force". Money which isn't reaching any trafficking victims - while throwing a few prostitutes on the pile and calling that "rescue".

The girls featured in Conor's article are victims and need help - true. But they are not victims of organized sex traffickers in this country. Our legal and medical systems in this country did not need to change the entire way they responded to this issue to help girls like those written about. Any one of them could have called 911, told the police they were being forced to work as prostitutes by pimps - and they would have had the police come out happy to lock up those pimps for what they did to those poor girls.

True sex trafficking rescue requires our whole system to change. I'll quote Margo Compton as an example. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=de5_1223141123 This is a woman who was forced to work in the sex industry by traffickers. She did the thing people are told to do when in trouble - she went to the police. They put her and her two young twin daughters into protective custody and went about going after not only her husband who was pimping her through the Hell's Angels, but also another man who had been forcing her to work for him by his threats to murder her twins. Her and her daughters were slaughtered ruthlessly by traffickers who know how to find anyone in "protective custody".

Which is why most real victims of trafficking don't even bother calling 911 for help. A recent example is the case of those strippers who were illegal aliens in a strip club owned by DEA agents. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/05/21/dea-agents-ran-jersey-s-sleaziest-strip-club.html DEA agents who were partying with Colombian drug lords. Which is why those dancers knew that calling law enforcement in to help them wasn't going to do anything but get someone whacked - just as victims of traffickers like Chris Butler knew they can't find help by calling local law enforcement because some of them are on the cop's payroll.

I'm not saying anything new. If anyone has seen "Departed" with Jack Nicholson - you'd know that getting someone on the inside of the larger trafficking rings without a mole in law enforcement revealing their identity was virtually impossible. Especially since the "old school" Italian mobsters were destroyed - and sex trafficking today has become tied to international trafficking cartels who use sex trafficking as only one tool in the arsenal for all kinds of crime such as we saw with the CEO of Glaxo Pharmaceuticals where Chinese prostitutes were actually manipulating the company, as well as even the stock price itself.

Law enforcement isn't the slightest bit prepared to help victims of these rings - not just the prostitute victims - but the "john" victims as evidenced by the Donald Burns case.  http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/crime/gay-porn-star-extortion-case-897653 That man went to the police for help when he was blackmailed. Who then by going after the trafficking ring improperly wound up getting the information he was trying to suppress actually made public record so he can't even try and silence it with a court order as he would have if the police had just let the whole matter alone even.

Please stop with the "awareness" of the problem. We've established it exists now. What we need to do now is let victims of this on both sides of the transactions, the prostitutes and the "johns" who are being blackmailed, robbed, even having trade secrets stolen from them literally worth billions know where https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/us-indicts-6-chinese-on-charges-of-stealing-trade-secrets/2015/05/19/f11fd35e-fdd8-11e4-805c-c3f407e5a9e9_story.html they can find help from people who know how to help them properly at www.sexworkersanonymous.com.

Mothers of these victims can also find help at www.swanfellowship.webs.com

Thank you for your time.
