Believe me I understand your frustration and where you're coming from. Especially when it comes to the issue of language. As you can imagine, language was a very difficult issue we also had when forming the 12 step program that we formed in 1987. We had to call ourselves as a group something. Alcoholics Anonymous was for alcoholics who had the disease of alcoholism. They identify as “alcoholics” in their meetings. However, in Narcotics Anonymous they do not identify as “narcotics” in the meeting. They identify personally as “addicts” because they suffer from the disease of addiction. So why not call themselves “Addiction Anonymous”? Well for one thing the program was founded in 1956. The disease had not been officially recognized as a disease at that time.
